‘The Ugly Young Woman’ is a fairytale in which Kurt Schwitters focuses on the shallow, cold and vapid nature of physical beauty. This piece focuses on the darker aspects of beauty which are often shrouded by the ignorance of society. The piece is based on ‘The Art of Seduction’ by Robert Greene. Robert Greene identifies the rules of a timeless, amoral game, seduction. The aesthetic of the piece comment on the underlying sinister nature of the content. Contrast between the sinister and beautiful creates a moral tension. The purple is secretive and unwilling to show its real feelings. It explores Bathsheba; Helen of Troy and the greatest seductress of them all, Cleopatra.
